It had been a few days since the golem attack at Blackwell. The Woman in White had been resting in that time, as had most of the other colorfolk of the blue faction. Healing magic could only do so much, especially given the lack of a healing master in the blue faction, but even then, the Woman in White was eager to get back to working order.
Daniel Erdagovern was to meet her in the training room at 5 O’clock, which left just enough time for a lesson of History of Magic, and a quick drive over to the warehouse that hid the hall of wizardry. Daniel couldn’t help but be a bit anxious to get the lesson done and get down to the training room, his training had been cut short due to the golem attack, and with the injuries of most of the blue faction, there wasn’t anyone in good enough condition to train him.
Now, Daniel was a patient man in most cases, but a few days feel like months when you’re waiting to learn how to use magic. However, as hard as it was, he had to put that aside for this lesson. Right outside the door, Daniel took a second to take a deep breath before walking into the room, his four students awaiting him.

It was not long after leaving for the hall of wizardry that Daniel arrived there, the traffic on this side of town was very minimal. He quickly rushed down to the training room, but when he turned a corner he almost ran right into the Woman in White, in one hand a cheeseburger with a frankly excessive amount of ketchup on it, and in the other, a couple of napkins.
“Dang, what’s the hurry Daniel? You’re an hour early.” she said. Daniel looked at the clock. Indeed, it was 4:06 PM. Daniel panicked for a moment, he didn’t want to seem too eager.
“Huh? I thought I was supposed to be here at 4 O’clock, I thought I was late.” Daniel said. A big fat lie that was, and frankly a pointless one.
“I definitely said 5 O’clock… But whatever, you’re here now, let me finish my food and then we’ll get started.” The Woman in White said, seeing right through it, and Daniel knew that she did.
Daniel hadn’t really known why he felt the need to lie there, it wouldn’t have mattered either way. It was like he was trying to avoid an embarrasing encounter in looking too eager, but look at him now, face bright red, more embarrased than he would have been otherwise. Overthinking things as usual.
The Woman in White had headed to the break room to eat, so Daniel figured he’d change into his robes. However, he wasn’t exactly sure where to find them. He had decided to keep them at the hall of wizardry not only for convenience’s sake, but also because he didn’t want people staring at him at the laundromat.
But again, he wasn’t sure where in the hall of wizardry his robes were. He had passed them off to some random colorman and asked them to put them away for him, something like Man in Bowls? He didn’t quite remember, and there was nobody in the hallway for him to ask, so he decided to go down to Melody’s office and see if she knew where they were.
When he got there, the door was already open, and inside was the Woman in Blue and the Man in Silver, looking over a map of New Furness. They were talking about something, probably to do with the black faction. Daniel wasn’t sure if he should interrupt. He thought about it for a few seconds, before realizing he was overthinking things again, and walked in.
“Oh, hey Daniel, what’s up?” Melody asked.
“Hey, I’m just looking for my robes is all.” Daniel replied, leaning on the doorframe.
“Your robes? I think Man in Bole left them in your office.” Melody replied.
“My office?” Daniel was a little bit surprised, he didn’t know he had an office in here. Do all the colorfolk have their own offices in here? He didn’t think they did, but who knows.
“Oh, did I not show you your office in the tour? It’s on the other side of the hallway, two to the right.” Melody said, pointing in the vague direction.
“Alright, I’ll check there I guess.” Daniel said, still not knowing for sure why he had an office. His question was answered when he looked at the door. This wasn’t his office, it was his father’s. “Andrew Erdagovern, Man in Blue” read the plate on the door. “Well, I guess it’s mine now.” He said to nobody in particular.
Opening the door, he looked inside. It wasn’t quite what he expected, he had been inside his father’s office at the company building before, which was quite barebones, only having the bare essentials for office work. He supposed that his father probably put most of his effort into this office instead of his “front office”. On the desk was various papers about who knows what, but what caught Daniel’s eye was that in the corner of it was a little clay sculpture.
Daniel instantly recognized it. He had made it, back in third grade art class. He remembered being so proud to see how impressed his dad was when he got home with it. He smiled for a bit, but it eventually subsided for a frown. For a moment this room had almost immortalized Daniel’s father in his mind, but when that moment subsided, it only brought pain. His father was gone.
Another moment later, Daniel snapped back to reality. Over the back of the office chair were his deep blue robes. He put them on and quickly left for the training room, not particularly wanting to look back.
When he got there, the Woman in White was already there waiting for him, in her own robes. It had only been a couple of minutes, if she had time to change clothes, then how fast did she eat that burger? Better to clear his mind for training than to think about that.
“Ok, you’re ready? Good. As you might remember, we were about to figure out what aptitudes you have before the golem attacked. We already found out about your aptitude for dark magic, so that means there’s 7 more to test. Let’s start with water.” The Woman in White said, walking over to the side of the room to grab a bucket of water stood on top of a cooler. Next to the cooler was a blowtorch, a pot with no plant, only dirt, and... was that a tesla coil mounted to a toy gun? Daniel had a feeling it was gonna be a long day of training.
It was. Three hours later they had gone through five elements, and were still working on lightning. The Woman in Silver had tuned in to watch about half an hour ago.
“Come on Daniel, let’s try one more time.” The Woman in White said, kneeling down again, the back of the tesla gun stood on her shoulder as if it was a rocket launcher.
“I... really don’t think... that’s necessary...” Daniel panted, his hair standing up in all crazy directions. He was too tired to even stand up. The water, earth, and ice from a few hours ago had all mixed into mud on the floor of the training room, but his robes getting dirty wasn’t even close to the front of his mind, all Daniel wanted was to sleep.
“Look, just one more time and we’ll be absolutely certain that you don’t have a lightning aptitude, and then we can finally move on to the last element. Then we’ll finally be done for the day, ok?” The Woman in White said, as if she was convincing a toddler to eat one more bite of broccoli, and not trying to get someone to agree to being shot with a lightning gun for the 17th time.
Daniel closed his eyes and sighed, standing back up. He adopted a fighting stance, his hands turning to finger guns. His right hand pointed directly at the point of the tesla gun, and his left pointed at a mannequin accross the room, that in three hours had taken not a single hit. He briefly looked over to the sidelines, noticing the Woman in Silver’s slightly concerned expression, which seemed to subside immediately when they locked eyes, being replaced with a smile as she put her thumbs up.
“Alright, one last time. Remember, when the electricity hits you, don’t focus your mind on the hand that it hits, focus on the hand you want to send it out of.” Woman in White said.
Daniel braced for impact and tried to focus as much as possible on his left hand, which was far from steady. Four or so seconds felt like they were never gonna end as daniel waited for the electricity to zap his right hand.
Then it shot.
He blacked out for a few seconds, before standing back up again. “So that’s... it…” Daniel managed to say.
“I guess so, no lightning aptitude.” The Woman in White shrugged.
“You doing ok Daniel?” The Woman in Silver asked from the sidelines.
“Y-yeah, I’m fine.” Daniel said, hunched over, hands on his knees. He wasn’t. She knew he wasn’t.
